Lightships - stationary vessels that serve as offshore lighthouses - were once a common feature of the American coasts. In "The Lightship," director Jerzy Skolimowski takes us into the storm-tossed, suffocatingly close world of a lightship to witness the age-old struggle of good Chesapeake Lightship and evil in a uniquely nightmarish setting. The ship's captain, Klaus Maria Brandauer, must somehow protect his men Chesapeake Lightship and his rebellious son against an invading gang led by a man who is as cunning as he is without scruples (Robert Duvall). At the start of the great Civil War, the Chesapeake Bay was a crucially important piece of watery real estate, with North Chesapeake Lightship and South struggling for its control. Up the Potomac, the Chesapeake's second-largest tributary, lay the capital of the United States; up the James, the Chesapeake's third-largest tributary, lay the Confederate capital. Whoever controlled the Bay would determine the course of the war. On the Rappahannock Chesapeake Lightship and other rivers of the region, fierce Chesapeake Lightship and tragic battles were fought. Down the Bay, the greatest American army ever assembled waged war. In Chesapeake waters, naval warfare was transformed forever, Chesapeake Lightship and on the rivers Chesapeake Lightship and the open Bay, the Civil War was finally won. This thoroughly readable narrative covers events in Chesapeake country, from the months preceding the conflict to shortly after the death of Lincoln.
